Cannabis Terpenes and the existence of
“The Entourage Effect” when combined with THC or CBD

Researchers from Johns Hopkins University and the University of Colorado conducted a study to see how a common cannabis terpene, limonene, affects anxiety when used with THC. THC alone can sometimes make people feel more anxious, but the study found that when combined with limonene, the anxiety was significantly reduced.

The study involved 38 people, though only 20 participants (10 men and 10 women) completed it. They used vaporized compounds, inhaling mixtures that included either limonene alone, THC alone, THC with limonene, or a placebo (just water vapor). The most promising result came from combining 30mg of THC with 15mg of limonene, which helped reduce feelings of anxiety, nervousness, and paranoia.

This study is one of the first to back up the “entourage effect” theory, which suggests that cannabinoids like THC and CBD work better or have fewer side effects when combined with terpenes or other natural compounds found in cannabis.

The study also used a special inhalation method called the Foltin paced puffing procedure. In this method, participants take a 5-second inhale, hold it for 10 seconds, exhale, and then take a 45-second break between hits. This is repeated 15 times or until there’s no vapor left. However, the first few participants experienced bad side effects from this strict method, so the researchers adjusted the process to avoid those issues.

Budshop uses terpenes in some of its edibles and incorporates terpenes in all of its concentrated distillates for dabs, which can enhance the effects and provide a smoother experience for users.
